Short Note Dynamic Rupture Simulation of the 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan Earthquake with Heterogeneous Initial Stress

چکیده
The rupture process and tectonic surroundings of the 2008 Wenchuan, China, earthquake are both complex in a way that might be related to the heterogeneous stress field of the Longmen Shan region. In this study, we construct dynamic models with heterogeneous initial stress to reproduce a kinematic inversion result by Wen et al. (2012) and investigate the physical mechanisms of the variable slip pattern and rupture velocity in this event. The results show that, for the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, (1) the rupture behavior and slip pattern can be explained by heterogeneities in initial stress and (2) the variations of rupture velocity and ground-motion pattern are strongly affected by both stress drop and fault strength. Our preferred dynamic model agrees with the kinematic model that the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake initiated with a slow velocity in the southwest, sped up in the segment with the largest slip, and then slowed down for the remaining propagation to the northeast.

The 2013 Lushan Earthquake in China Tests
Following the devastating 2008 Wenchuan earthquake that ruptured the central–northern segments of the Longmenshan fault in Sichuan, China, many studies assessed its impact on other major faults in this region (e.g., Parsons et al., 2008; Toda et al., 2008). On 20 April 2013, theMw 6.6 Lushan earthquake ruptured the southern segment of the Longmenshan fault, allowing these assessments to be test...
متن کاملRole of initial stress rotations in rupture dynamics and ground motion:A case studywith implications for theWenchuan earthquake
[1] Motivated by observations in the 2008Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake, we study effects of systematic changes in the principal stress orientation along the fault strike on rupture dynamics and ground motion using a 3‐D finite‐element method. Based on Anderson’s theory of faulting, we set up the initial stress field with rotations in stress orientations along strike for a dynamic rupture model of ...
متن کاملImpoundment of the Zipingpu reservoir and triggering of the 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake, China
Impoundment of the Zipingpu reservoir (ZR), China, began in September 2005 and was followed 2.7 years later by the 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake (WE) rupturing the Longmen Shan Fault (LSF), with its epicenter ~12 km away from the ZR. Based on the poroelastic theory, we employ three-dimensional finite element models to simulate the evolution of stress and pore pressure due to reservoir impound...
متن کاملA special issue on the great 12 May 2008 Wenchuan earthquake (Mw7.9): Observations and unanswered questions
The 12 May 2008 Wenchuan earthquake (Mw 7.9) ruptured the active Longmen Shan thrust belt bounding the eastern margin of the Tibetan plateau against the Sichuan basin (Fig. 1) (Burchfiel et al., 2008). Initial observations of this devastating earthquake were reported in several short papers focusing on coseismic slip and earthquake-fault geometry (e.g., Wang et al., 2008; Xu et al., 2009; Lin e...
متن کاملDistribution of seismic speed changes associated with the 12 May 2008 Mw 7 . 9 Wenchuan earthquake
We used continuous recordings in Sichuan, China to track the temporal change in elastic properties of the medium, namely the seismic speed, at a regional scale in a 2 year period which includes the great Wenchuan Mw 7.9 earthquake. The data are recorded by a temporary network of 156 broad-band seismographs, in a 200km × 200km region that covers the southern 2/3 of the fault system activated dur...
